More Green. It's Alive!

This spicy Mesclun (a mix of greens) is almost ready to start harvesting.

I've been preparing part of the garden for cucumbers on trellis' and melons.  The cuke seedlings are up and I just planted the melon seeds today.  I am growing a charentais type melon called Savor and a melon called Sun Jewel which has crisp sweet flesh.  For cucumbers I planted Suyo Long, Marketmore 86 and Northern Pickling in cell type containers about 4 days ago.

Seedlings for tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant have already been set outside under plastic in their cell containers or small pots.  The eggplants are a little worn by the cool night temps in the high 30's and lower 40's.

April 26

There's green in the garden.

Lots of greens are up under the row covers:

Here's an update on the eggplant seedlings.  They are getting large.  I think I may have planted too early.

New Developments in the Garden

I haven't posted in a while but I've been working!

Here's several rows of beets, carrots, turnips, spinach, arugula, mesclun mix, radish, and broccoli raab all covered with floating row cover.

And Sugar Ann peas planted on the end.

And this bird KO'd itself on the inside of my window after flying into my house.  After several minutes of dazed wobbling it made it's escape.

Eggplant Update and more digging!

Here are the eggplant seedlings as of yesterday.  The Calliope are a uniform green while the Orient Express have purple stems.

And here's the State of the Garden as of yesterday morning.  It is, of course, in a state of inflation.  Who knows how big it will be tomorrow?

As pictured it is ~44' long, 14' wide in the wider portion, and 8' wide in upper right of photo.

Compost is cool.

The pile is cold as it was not big enough to be active during the winter.  Nearly all of my paper waste and kitchen waste from the winter are sitting here partially coved in turf chunks.

New leaves etc.

The eggplant seedlings have started on the first true leaves.  Calliope is ahead of Orient express and looking more vigorous.

And under the skylight the asparagus ferns are growing well.  The new spears are almost twice as thick as the original and roots are popping out the bottom of the cells at an alarming rate :)

Finally!

For the first time this spring I can work in the garden.  Here's some expansion going on.

three things

worked earth

The fork and hoe are indispensable tools.  The earth was perfect for turning over... At least in this one small thawed patch.  Grass and weeds haven't had a chance yet so roots were not a problem.

March 26

Doves on my walk.

Here are some mourning doves on my walkway after a light snow.

Updates and new sprouts.

Here's those onion seedlings from a few days back.  I trimmed them to ~3 inches.

Trimmed onions

And the asparagus seedlings have put up more spears.  This is an interesting plant no doubt.

And presenting.... Eggplant; Calliope and Orient express seedlings.
